On Friendship & Growing Old Together

Hannah Barnes

September has always been, hands down, my favourite month of the year. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that could have a little to do with my birthday falling towards the end of September; but mainly my love for this time of year is all about the way the leaves change, the baggy sweaters come out and the hibernation period begins.

This September though, I’ve had even more to celebrate than usual, as a good friend of mine from college recently tied the knot. And I can’t think of a better way to open up my favourite month than watching two friends declare their love for each other, whilst wearing the biggest smiles I’ve ever seen on their faces.

September is a transitional season, taking us from the warmth of summer into the depths of winter with a gentle, burnt umber rustle and keeping us plied with hot drinks all the while. I can’t think of a better time to change up your relationship, and if marriage is your thing, what a brilliant way to mark your transition into married life.

I spent the weekend surrounded by friends from far and wide, thanks to the wedding giving us all a great excuse to get together and get a little lairy. Which, as evidenced by the amount of photo booth prop pictures taken and our hangovers the following day, we all did with gusto. We met new friends, danced the night away and ate so much food that I think we’re pretty much all set now until spring. We reminisced about how long we’d all known each other and (towards the end of the night) how much we all loved each other before we stumbled home, happily carrying our shoes, somewhere around the early hours of Sunday morning.

Somewhere in the haze of booze we’d done what drunken friends are want to do and made what were, in hindsight, some pretty ambitious morning plans which included me getting my car back from the venue in time to drive everyone to brunch. If the title of this blog hasn’t yet given you a clue, that didn’t happen and instead I snoozed through three alarms and a fair few phone calls from the gang.

When you’ve got some of the best members of the human race in your corner though, they tend to go above and beyond. Which is how I found myself hung over and bleary eyed, making the most of the sunshine in my garden with a dozen cupcakes and an early birthday present. I’ll be road tripping through Europe over my birthday, you see, so this year I’m having a whole birthday month. The girls had put together a print listing all the things they love about me – which is something we’ve been putting together for each other in the course of this year’s birthdays.

If you’ve got any friends, you’ll know how many things can go unsaid. The silent ways in which you all love and appreciate each other are known without being expressed, but there is something truly wonderful in seeing them all laid out in indisputable ink (with a pretty pastel border) and knowing wholeheartedly that you are loved.

Friendship is one of the most important things in my life, and last weekend really brought home to me how blessed I am to have these people, and all the friends from other circles, around. We witnessed two people who love each other get married, but we know we’ll all be growing old together without having signed a contract. Friendship is a thing freely given, there is no ceremony for friends to share their love, but with gifts like these, and friends like mine, I don’t think we need one.
