Monster Baking

Hannah Barnes

It’s finally Friday and I’m sure we’re all super stoked about this one! We’re one step closer to scaring ourselves silly for Halloween.

Technically, the day itself falls on Monday but many people will be making the most of this weekend to celebrate in spooky style. Not to mention all the trick 'a' treaters set to descend, threatening all kinds of mischief if you fail to deliver their treat.

With the launch of Hoxton Street Monster Supplies Cookbook falling so close to Halloween, I got my hands on some recipes from the fine folk over there. So I've decided to home bake my treats for this years masked bounty hunters. It’s a lot easier to pick up the fun size bags of sweets at the supermarket, I know and usually I’m all for an easy life but Halloween is one of my favourite holidays and also happens to be my late Grandad’s birthday – so baking has become a bit of an annual tradition.

The Hoxton Street Monster Supplies Cookbook is perfect for this as their creepy take on classic meals, cocktails and desserts make a brilliant accompaniment to Halloween. I decided to make a batch of Fairybrain Fudge and turned their recipe for Maggot Brownies into brownie bites to go alongside. To be honest, after tasting my wares, here’s hoping the trick 'a' treaters steer clear of our house this year.

Both bakes are delicious but I have a particular fondness for the fudge – which is the traditional crumbly type that makes me go weak at the knees. The brownies on the other hand, have been a huge hit with everyone else and the maggots-come-nuts add a lovely contrast to their gooey chocolate centers.

You can follow these recipes yourself using the recipe cards above. I’ve also included Dragon Fuel and Crunching Bone Toffee although I haven’t tested these out for myself just yet – so let me know how you get on!
